'Ponniyin Selvan 2' is a sequel to the first part, which was released in 2022 and received rave reviews from critics and audiences alike. The film is based on the novel by Kalki Krishnamurthy, which narrates the story of Arulmozhi Varman, who later became Rajaraja I, the greatest ruler of the Chola dynasty. The film has a stellar star cast, including Vikram, Karthi, Jayam Ravi, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Trisha Krishnan, Sobhita Dhulipala, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Jayaram, R. The film starts from where the first part ended, with Arulmozhi Varman escaping from a deadly assassination attempt by Nandini (Aishwarya Rai Bachchan), the wife of Periya Pazhuvettaraiyar (R. Sarathkumar), who is secretly plotting to overthrow the Chola throne. Arulmozhi Varman is aided by his loyal friend Vallavaraiyan Vandiyadevan (Karthi) and his love interest Poonguzhali (Aishwarya Lekshmi), who is a boatwoman. Meanwhile, Aditya Karikalan (Vikram), the elder brother of Arulmozhi Varman and the rightful heir to the throne, is facing a rebellion from his own cousin Madurantakar (Rahman), who is supported by Chinna Pazhuvettaraiyar (Parthiban Radhakrishnan). Aditya Karikalan also has to deal with his estranged relationship with his sister Kundavai (Trisha Krishnan), who is in love with Vandiyadevan and wants Arulmozhi Varman to be the king. The film also explores the lives of other characters such as Vaanathi (Sobhita Dhulipala), who is in love with Arulmozhi Varman; Azhwarkadiyan Nambi (Jayaram), who is a spy and a devotee of Lord Vishnu; Sundara Chozhan (Prakash Raj), who is the father of Aditya Karikalan and Arulmozhi Varman; and many others.
The film is a visual spectacle, with stunning cinematography by Ravi Varman and grand production design by Sabu Cyril. The film also boasts of an impressive music score by A.R.
