Bob Marley was diagnosed with a type of skin cancer called acral lentiginous melanoma in 1977. The cancer started as a dark spot under his toenail, which he initially ignored. He later injured his toe while playing soccer, and the wound became infected. A biopsy revealed that he had cancer, and doctors advised him to amputate his toe and undergo chemotherapy.
However, Bob Marley refused to follow the doctors' recommendations. He believed that cutting off his toe would go against his Rastafarian beliefs, which consider the body to be a temple that should not be tampered with. He also feared that losing his toe would affect his balance and ability to perform on stage. He opted for a less invasive surgery that removed only part of his toe and the nail bed.
He also rejected chemotherapy, which he saw as a form of poison that would harm his body and soul. He preferred to rely on natural remedies, such as herbs, juices and a vegetarian diet. He also prayed and meditated regularly, trusting in the power of Jah (God) to heal him.
Unfortunately, Bob Marley's cancer was not cured by his alternative methods. It spread to other parts of his body, including his lungs and brain. He continued to tour and record music until he became too weak to do so. He died on May 11, 1981, at the age of 36.
Bob Marley's refusal to accept treatment for cancer may seem irrational or irresponsible to some people. However, we have to respect his personal choice and understand that it was based on his deeply held convictions and values. He lived and died according to his own principles, and left behind a legacy of music and messages that will live on forever.
